Description

A French patriotic porcelain plate made by T&V Limoges, dated 1914.

The centre is decorated with a commemorative composition dedicated to the Allied powers at the beginning of the First World War. The design includes four portrait medallions, national flags, laurel branches, ribbons and the date “1914”.

The figures depicted are the principal allies of France in 1914:
Raymond Poincaré, President of the French Republic;
Emperor Nicholas II of Russia;
King George V of Great Britain;
King Albert I of Belgium.

The plate was most likely produced as a patriotic commemorative piece at the outbreak of the First World War, celebrating the alliance and solidarity between France, Russia, Great Britain and Belgium. The flags and laurel branches emphasize victory, unity and national honour. The rim is decorated with a green foliate border and fine gilt lines.

The reverse bears a green T&V Limoges France mark. Tressemanes & Vogt was one of the known Limoges porcelain manufacturers active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Patriotic porcelain of this type was produced during the First World War period as commemorative and decorative ware reflecting the political and military alliances of the time.
