Description

A rare and exceptionally ornate Armenian kindjal dagger dating to the early 19th century, possibly originating from Southern Armenia or Persia.

The dagger was made in the Caucasian tradition and represents a particularly elaborate example of the region’s historical edged weapons.

The long, straight, double-edged steel blade tapers to a sharp symmetrical point and features two pronounced longitudinal fullers on each side.

One side of the blade is richly decorated with fine gold and silver inlay, arranged in intricate geometric and foliate patterns extending along its length. Both sides display elaborate etched ornamentation with scrolling arabesques and stylised floral motifs.

A maker’s mark is present on the blade, although the inscription has not been deciphered.

The characteristic I-shaped hilt has light-coloured grip scales secured by two large decorative rivets. The metal mounts feature finely executed geometric and ornamental patterns with gold-coloured details.

The quality and richness of the decoration suggest a prestigious commissioned weapon, possibly intended for a wealthy or high-ranking owner.

During the early 19th century, the kindjal formed an important part of traditional Caucasian male dress. Finely decorated examples could function both as practical edged weapons and as symbols of social standing.

The combination of gold and silver inlay, elaborate etching, finely decorated grip fittings and distinctive Caucasian construction makes this an interesting collector’s piece.

The exact workshop and maker have not been identified.
