Bronze Sculpture “A Berber Horseman and an Arabian Stallion”, after Paolo Troubetzkoy

Description

A bronze sculpture based on a model by Paolo / Paul Troubetzkoy (1866–1938), depicting a Berber horseman mounted on an Arabian stallion. The rider is shown in flowing traditional dress, seated on a finely modelled horse with the head slightly raised and the body rendered in Troubetzkoy’s characteristic lively, impressionistic manner.

The surface is richly textured, with expressive modelling, irregular planes and a dark brown patina. The sculpture is signed on the base: Paolo Troubetzkoy.

Troubetzkoy was especially admired for his ability to capture movement, character and the immediate impression of life in bronze. His equestrian and animal subjects form an important part of his work, alongside his celebrated portrait statuettes.

Historical note:
Prince Paul Troubetzkoy was born in 1866 and became one of the most distinctive sculptors of the late 19th and early 20th century. He worked between Italy, Russia, France and the United States, and was known for portrait statuettes, animal sculpture and equestrian subjects. The Musée d’Orsay notes his modern, spontaneous sculptural language and his strong interest in animal subjects, while the Troubetzkoy Archive Project records his importance as a leading society portraitist and sculptor of the period.
