Description

A fine and expressive bronze figure of a young girl, probably Marie Troubetzkoy, by Paul Troubetzkoy (1866–1938). The child is shown standing in a slightly self-assured pose, wearing a broad hat and a flowing dress with softly modelled folds. One hand is set at the side, while the other holds part of the dress, giving the figure a charming sense of movement and character.

The sculpture is executed in Troubetzkoy’s characteristic impressionistic manner, with lively surface modelling, visible sculptural texture and a spontaneous, almost sketch-like treatment of form. Rather than presenting a polished academic portrait, the artist captures the living presence, posture and personality of the sitter. This approach made Troubetzkoy one of the most distinctive sculptors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Paul Troubetzkoy was a Russian-Italian sculptor from the princely Troubetzkoy family. He became known for portraits, society figures, animals and elegant small bronzes, and worked between Russia, Italy, France and the United States. His sculpture is especially admired for its nervous modelling, natural movement and refined psychological observation.
