Description

**After Franz Roubaud (1856–1928)**
**Circassian Horsemen at a River**

An atmospheric oil painting on canvas depicting a group of Circassian horsemen resting beside a mountain stream in the Caucasus, based on a composition associated with the celebrated battle and Orientalist painter Franz Roubaud.

The composition presents a peaceful moment during a journey through the mountainous landscape. In the foreground, a saddled chestnut horse stands beside the rocky bank, while a traveller bends towards the clear flowing water. Two mounted figures appear in the middle distance, with pale mountain slopes rising beneath a bright blue sky.

The artist has paid particular attention to the horses, traditional Caucasian clothing, riding equipment and the natural landscape. The contrast between the turquoise water, sunlit rocks and warm reddish-brown horses gives the scene a lively yet harmonious character.

A richly coloured textile placed on the rocks adds an attractive decorative detail and reinforces the Caucasian subject.

The lower right corner bears a signature reading “F. Roubaud”.

**About the artist**

Franz Roubaud (1856–1928) was a renowned painter of military and historical subjects, particularly celebrated for his depictions of the Caucasus, cavalry scenes and dramatic battle compositions.

Born in Odessa, Roubaud studied painting in Munich and developed a distinctive artistic approach combining realistic observation, expressive movement and an interest in the peoples and landscapes of the Caucasus.

He is especially remembered for his monumental panoramic paintings, including *The Defence of Sevastopol* and *The Battle of Borodino*.

His Caucasian compositions frequently feature horsemen, mountain landscapes, traditional costumes and scenes from everyday life.
