An exceptional French Art Nouveau glass bowl by the celebrated Daum Nancy manufactory, circa 1900, distinguished by its refined floral decoration, delicate blue opalescence and harmonious elongated oval form.

The substantial bowl is made of softly opalescent glass in a pale blue-lavender tone. Its broad, gently rounded body rises from a low oval foot to a wide opening, creating a graceful, balanced silhouette. The subtly textured, satin-finished exterior contrasts beautifully with the more translucent interior, producing delicate variations of colour and light.

The exterior is decorated with an elegant naturalistic composition of flowering branches, apparently representing honeysuckle (chèvrefeuille). The blossoms are rendered in soft lilac, mauve and greyish-white tones, with finely gilded stamens and delicate outlines. Slender stems and carefully modelled leaves extend around the circumference, giving the decoration a fluid, continuous rhythm.

The floral motifs appear in varying degrees of relief, achieved through carefully controlled surface treatment and engraving, complemented by polychrome enamel and gilded details.

Particularly attractive is the subtle contrast between the cool blue opalescent ground, the muted floral colours and the warm gold highlights. This restrained palette produces an exceptionally sophisticated effect, characteristic of the finest French Art Nouveau glass.

The upper edge retains traces of gilded decoration. The interior also reveals the floral design through the translucent glass, creating an additional impression of depth.

The bowl is signed Daum Nancy with the Cross of Lorraine.

Historical Background:

The Daum glassworks was established in Nancy in 1878, when Jean Daum acquired an existing glass factory. His sons Auguste Daum (1853–1909) and Antonin Daum (1864–1930) subsequently transformed the enterprise into one of the most celebrated artistic glass manufactories in France.

Around 1891, Antonin Daum established an artistic department devoted to the development of innovative forms and decorative techniques. The company became an important representative of the École de Nancy, the artistic movement that helped establish Nancy as a major centre of European Art Nouveau.

The manufactory achieved international recognition at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900, where it received a Grand Prix. Daum’s artistic production was distinguished by the sophisticated use of coloured and opalescent glass, acid etching, engraving, enamelling and gilding.

Museum Collections:

The importance of Daum’s artistic production is reflected in major French museum collections.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy maintains an extensive reference collection of Daum glass, covering the manufactory’s production from its foundation in 1878 to the present day.

The Musée de l’École de Nancy also preserves an important collection of Daum Art Nouveau glass, including botanical and floral compositions demonstrating the company’s technical and artistic achievements.

The present bowl, with its refined opalescent glass, elaborate floral decoration, substantial dimensions and signed manufacture, is a particularly attractive example of the artistic glass associated with the École de Nancy.

Its quality of execution and decorative sophistication make it a museum-quality collector’s piece.

A fine and decorative pair of French Art Nouveau glass vases attributed to Legras & Cie, Saint-Denis, circa 1900.

The matching vases are distinguished by their elegant, elongated cylindrical bodies, which widen gracefully towards the bases to form gently flared, rounded feet. Their proportions create an architectural silhouette characteristic of French decorative glass from the Belle Époque.

Both vases are made of grey-toned glass with a softly frosted, subtly textured surface. The upper rims are finished with broad gilded bands, providing a warm contrast to the cool grey background.

The decoration consists of delicate violet flowers, individually painted in shades of lavender, purple and white, with subtle yellow centres. Some blossoms are arranged in small clusters near the bases, while others are scattered along the tall cylindrical bodies, creating a light, naturally balanced composition.

Finely painted gilded stems and leaves accompany the flowers. The combination of coloured enamel and gold decoration lends the vases a particularly refined appearance.

Although conceived as a matching pair, the individual placement of flowers varies between the two vases, adding visual interest while preserving their harmonious overall design.

Historical Background:

François-Théodore Legras (1839–1916) was an important French glassmaker who directed the Saint-Denis glassworks near Paris. Under his leadership, the manufactory became one of France’s major glass producers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Legras developed an extensive range of artistic glass, particularly enamelled and gilded vessels featuring flowers, leaves and landscapes. His decorative production became an important part of French glassmaking during the Art Nouveau period.

Works by the Legras glassworks are represented in French museum collections, including the Musée du Verre François Décorchemont in Conches-en-Ouche, which has exhibited and catalogued numerous examples of the factory’s artistic glass.

The present pair displays stylistic and technical features associated with Legras production, including the frosted grey glass, polychrome enamelled violets and gilded floral decoration.

Neither vase bears a visible maker’s signature. The attribution to Legras & Cie is based on stylistic comparison and remains unconfirmed.

An impressive French Art Nouveau glass vase attributed to Legras & Cie, Saint-Denis, France, circa 1900.

The vase has a distinctive elongated form, combining a tall, slender cylindrical neck with a rounded bulbous lower body and a subtly flattened circular base. The narrow circular opening is finished with a delicate gilded rim.

The grey-toned frosted glass surface has a softly textured, almost hammered appearance, providing an elegant background for the carefully executed polychrome enamel decoration.

Clusters of violets in rich purple, lavender and white are distributed across the long neck and rounded body. Each blossom is individually detailed, with yellow centres and subtle variations in colour. The flowers are accompanied by finely gilded stems and leaves, whose delicate outlines contrast with the subdued grey glass.

The composition combines the naturalistic botanical decoration typical of Art Nouveau with a particularly graceful and monumental silhouette. The gilded floral details and subtle tonal variations give the vase an appealing decorative character.

Historical Background:

François-Théodore Legras (1839–1916) was an influential French glassmaker associated with the glassworks at Saint-Denis near Paris. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Legras & Cie produced a wide variety of decorative glass, including enamelled and gilded vases, cameo glass and other ornamental objects inspired by flowers and nature.

The manufactory became particularly known for decorative glass produced during the Belle Époque, when French glassmakers developed new artistic approaches to colour, texture and surface ornamentation.

The present vase displays several decorative characteristics associated with Legras production, including the frosted glass finish, polychrome floral enamelling and gilded details.

The vase bears no visible manufacturer’s signature. Its attribution to Legras & Cie is stylistic and has not been independently confirmed.

An elegant French Art Nouveau glass vase attributed to the renowned Legras & Cie glassworks of Saint-Denis, France, circa 1900.

The vase features a tall, slender cylindrical body rising from a circular spreading foot and terminating in a spectacular flared, deeply ruffled rim. The undulating mouth is enhanced by delicate gilded edging, creating an attractive sculptural silhouette.

The frosted and subtly textured glass surface is decorated with finely enamelled violet flowers in shades of purple, lavender and white. The delicate blossoms are arranged asymmetrically on slender stems, accompanied by foliage picked out in warm golden tones.

The combination of translucent greyish glass, soft floral colours and restrained gilding is characteristic of French Art Nouveau decorative glass of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The vase is attributed to Legras & Cie, an important French glass manufacturer established in Saint-Denis near Paris. François-Théodore Legras (1839–1916) became particularly celebrated for his innovative decorative glass, including enamelled floral compositions, acid-frosted surfaces and nature-inspired designs. His glassworks were among the significant producers of French artistic glass during the Belle Époque.

The present vase closely follows the decorative vocabulary associated with Legras production, particularly in its floral enamelling, frosted finish and elegantly shaped rim.

The vase is unsigned; the attribution to Legras & Cie is based on stylistic and technical characteristics rather than a manufacturer’s mark.

An exceptional and unusually large oval Art Nouveau glass bowl by Émile Gallé, Nancy, France, circa 1900.

The bowl is of broad, gently flattened oval form, with a softly undulating, irregular upper rim and a substantial glass body. Its exterior has a deep smoky-brown to bronze-toned appearance, enriched by a finely textured, matte surface that creates a striking background for the naturalistic decoration.

The vessel is decorated with an elaborate polychrome botanical composition depicting a pumpkin vine, with small rounded pumpkins and gourds hanging from gracefully curling stems. The fruits are rendered in warm shades of orange, russet, red and cream, accompanied by large autumnal leaves in amber, violet, muted blue and reddish-brown tones.

Delicate tendrils twist and intertwine across the surface, while small blossoms, buds and organically shaped leaves complete the composition. The fine modelling of the botanical motifs creates subtle contrasts between the coloured decoration and the darker background.

The artist has skilfully used the elongated oval shape of the vessel to develop a continuous decorative scene, allowing the vine to extend around its circumference.

The decoration also continues along the inside walls, where floral and botanical details are visible beneath the irregular upper edge. This treatment gives the bowl a particularly sophisticated artistic character, as the design can be appreciated from above as well as from every side.

The undulating rim, restrained dark colouring and richly varied autumnal palette evoke the organic forms of nature and the transition between the seasons.

The work demonstrates the aesthetic principles of Art Nouveau, in which decoration and the shape of the object were conceived as parts of a unified artistic composition.

A prominent engraved Gallé signature is present on the exterior, confirming the manufacturer’s identification.

The combination of its generous dimensions, considerable weight, unusual oval form, complex botanical decoration and distinctive signature makes this a highly decorative, museum-quality example of French Art Nouveau glassmaking.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Émile Gallé (1846–1904) was one of the most important French artists and master glassmakers of the Art Nouveau period.

Born in Nancy, Gallé developed an exceptional interest in botany, natural sciences, literature and decorative art. His knowledge of plants became a defining influence on his artistic work.

In 1877, Gallé assumed control of the family business and progressively transformed it into one of Europe’s leading centres of artistic glassmaking.

His creations frequently featured flowers, leaves, insects, fruits and woodland plants, rendered through sophisticated combinations of coloured glass, enamel decoration, engraving and acid etching.

At the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1889, Gallé received a Grand Prix for his glasswork, establishing his reputation as an internationally recognised artist.

In 1901, he became the founding president of the École de Nancy, an influential association of artists and craftsmen dedicated to the renewal of decorative arts through forms inspired by nature.

Gallé’s glassworks are particularly admired for their botanical accuracy, expressive compositions, technical innovations and the close relationship between the decorative subject and the form of the vessel.

The pumpkin vine motif of the present bowl belongs to the naturalistic artistic vocabulary characteristic of Gallé and the École de Nancy, where plants and seasonal changes were central themes.

MUSEUM COLLECTIONS

Important works by Émile Gallé are preserved in leading museums and public collections.

The Musée de l’École de Nancy, France, possesses a major reference collection of more than 400 works by Gallé, including exceptional examples of his glass production.

Among the museum’s celebrated objects are the bowl Roses de France (1901), the vase Les hommes noirs (1900) and the sculptural glass work Main aux algues et coquillages (1904).

These documented museum pieces demonstrate the importance of Gallé’s artistic glass within the history of European decorative arts. They provide historical and artistic context rather than identical comparisons with the present bowl.

The present example, with its ambitious oval format, autumnal pumpkin-vine decoration, polychrome detail and prominent Gallé signature, is a distinguished collector’s piece deserving comparison with museum-quality Art Nouveau decorative glass.

An exceptional and unusually large oval Art Nouveau glass fruit bowl by the celebrated French glassworks Daum Nancy, circa 1900–1910.

The bowl is of elegant, elongated oval form, executed in thick, pale blue glass with a finely textured, acid-frosted exterior and a smoother, softly translucent interior. The substantial weight and refined execution give the piece an impressive sculptural presence.

The exterior is decorated with an elaborate naturalistic composition of tulips, individually rendered in several colours and stages of flowering. One side displays dramatic violet and purple tulips, while the opposite sections feature flowers in soft rose, amber, copper-red and golden-yellow tones. Their long, flowing stems and gracefully curling turquoise-green leaves extend around the body of the bowl, creating a continuous decorative composition.

The flower petals are delicately shaded to emphasise their natural forms, while the foliage introduces a striking contrast against the cool blue background. The decoration combines finely detailed hand-painting with the subtle relief and texture of the glass surface.

A narrow gilded band follows the upper rim, providing a refined finishing touch and enhancing the contrast between the blue glass and the warm floral colours.

The interior retains the delicate blue tint of the glass, allowing the exterior decoration to remain faintly visible through the translucent surface.

Particularly noteworthy is the carefully considered arrangement of the flowers, with different tulips appearing on opposite sides of the vessel. The composition changes according to the viewing angle, giving the bowl the character of an independent decorative artwork rather than an ordinary functional table vessel.

The underside retains the remains of a gilt Daum Nancy signature, consistent with the attribution to the renowned French glassworks.

Historical background:

The Daum glassworks was established in Nancy, France, in 1878 by Jean Daum. Under the direction of his sons Auguste Daum (1853–1909) and Antonin Daum (1864–1930), the firm became one of the most important representatives of French Art Nouveau glassmaking.

Around 1891, Antonin Daum established an artistic department dedicated to the production of innovative decorative glass. The factory developed sophisticated combinations of acid etching, coloured enamelling, layered glass, wheel engraving and naturalistic botanical decoration.

Daum became closely associated with the École de Nancy, the influential artistic movement that transformed nature, especially flowers and plants, into a principal source of inspiration for decorative art.

The artistic achievements of the manufactory were recognised internationally when Daum received the Grand Prix at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900.

Museum collections:

Important examples of Daum glass are preserved in major museum collections.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy houses an exceptional reference collection of more than 900 Daum glass objects, documenting the development of the manufactory from its origins in 1878 through the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York holds a documented Art Nouveau glass bowl designed by Louis Majorelle and Daum Frères, circa 1910, museum accession number 1973.36.

These museum holdings illustrate the recognised artistic and historical significance of Daum’s glass production. They are contextual references and are not presented as identical examples of the present bowl.

With its generous dimensions, substantial weight, unusual oval form, multi-coloured tulip decoration and partially preserved original signature, the present piece represents a distinguished, museum-quality example of Daum Nancy’s artistic glass production during the height of the Art Nouveau movement.

An exceptional pair of French Art Nouveau glass vases produced by Mont Joye, Legras & Cie, at the Saint-Denis glassworks near Paris, circa 1900.

Each vase is of tall cylindrical form, executed in colourless glass with a finely textured, acid-frosted surface resembling ice crystals. The bodies are decorated with elegant naturalistic compositions of flowering poppies, gracefully curved stems, large serrated leaves and hanging seed capsules.

The flowers are highlighted with rich gilding, while the leaves are delicately coloured in muted green, amber and reddish tones. The contrast between the shimmering gold ornament and the frosted glass creates a striking decorative effect characteristic of the finest French Art Nouveau glass.

The upper rims are finished with narrow gilt bands. The floral compositions extend around the cylindrical bodies, demonstrating the harmonious botanical design associated with the Mont Joye range.

Both vases retain a gilt maker’s mark beneath the bases, featuring the characteristic Mont Joye emblem with an ecclesiastical figure and the initials L.C., referring to Legras & Cie.
